Bernard Underwood is a life designer and founder of The House of An Intimate Place. He has a fabulous approach when it comes down to providing his clientele with brilliant interior designs, luxury living, event planning, and styling. Bernard is able to use his sense of a better living for a personal approach on how individuals can discover themselves in a whole new way. He sets aside his approach for how a person can be catered to. Underwood states “No money is too small or too great to create your perfect lifestyle”.
He is a true perfectionist; he enjoys reflecting on the end result of his work. From start to finish he is able to analyze how his sense of style makes him a true, “Trendsetter! “His strong faith in God has led him to become the designer that he is today. He cuts no short corners to be who he is and what he is on his pathway to become. (Be)nards great designs has landed him a spot on the HGTV network that is scheduled to be aired late spring 2014. He puts it best when he said, “My love for designing has afforded me the opportunity to demonstrate how a basic concept can easily be so surreal, but then turned into reality.” Throughout this whole journey he couldn’t help, but stop and became emotional by his struggle to put into words how it now feels as he acknowledge what he has prayed for every day. The reality of it all was that he felt complete as he reflected upon the passing of his mother and how she would be so proud of him and his accomplishments to date.
Underwoods’ love for interior design and his mother has led him to create a candle to celebrate his mother’s legacy and honoring the very woman that gave him insights on designing. The candle project extends the love that he had for her. He tried to touch the very essence of her by creating the candle to have various notes; that range from Neroli to luxury suede. He called the first candle [Billie] that was his late Mother’s name. This candle is a true inspiration and can be purchased at www.anintimateplace.com and select boutiques.

Bernard Underwood Judging for "Retail As Art"...
High-profile photography contest gives high school students taste of retail world

2014 edition of Retail as Art, an annual competition showcasing the best photographic talent in Dallas-area high schools, returns with a milestone: The organization will issue more than $10,000 in scholarships — double last year's amount.
Meanwhile, the number of participants has increased dramatically. This annual event is open to high school students, and their photos must exhibit a retail theme. Last year's contest drew more than 60 student participants and more than 200 submissions.
This year saw entries from 165 students and 21 schools. The awards (and scholarships) will be presented at a ceremony on April 9 at 129 Leslie, an event space in the Dallas Design District.
"We are humbled by the generosity and support of our clients, colleagues and business partners," said Mickey Ashmore, CEO of United Commercial Realty (UCR) and founder of Retail as Art.
In 2008, UCR created Retail as Art as a 5013c organization, to give back to the community. All proceeds benefit the UCR Retail as Art Fund, exclusively for educational and charitable purposes.
Participating students submitted their images by March 8. A panel of judges will gather on March 13 to choose the winners.
Another new twist: An Instagram category was added this year. "By adding Instagram, we are able to reach a larger group of student photographers," said Kendall Schiffler, UCR's marketing director. "Our goal is to interest more students by tweaking our format over time."
Judges include Evans Caglage, Dallas Morning News; commercial photographer Wade Griffith; Lisa Petty, DFW Style Daily; Samantha Sano, SWOON, the studio; Bernard Underwood, An Intimate Place; Jeyson Paez, @InstaDFW (Instagram judge); and this reporter.
The venture also has support from a group of bloggers who will serve as patrons to raise the program's profile: Cynthia Smoot, Oh So Cynthia; Betsy Mitchell, The Dallas Socials and Lip Gloss and High Heels; Jennifer Buxton, Real Posh Mom; Lea Ann Stundins, Mommy’s Wish List; and Courtney and Allison Edwards, Where Wear in the City.
The Retail as Art program culminates with a gallery-style exhibition and awards ceremony at 129 Leslie on April 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The event will showcase the top submissions, with hors d'oeuvre from Bolsa Mercado, tunes by DJ Blake Ward and the opportunity for students to mingle with judges and sponsors. Prints of the winning photographs will be on sale at the event.

Designing events, showrooms, homes, and fashion-forward retail spaces coast-to-coast, Texas native Bernard Underwood is in theinspiration business.
Through his company An Intimate Place, this sought-after expert focuses on the luxury market through interiors, clothing, and visual presentation. All reflect the clever craftsmanship and aesthetic innovation instilled in Underwood by his mother. Honoring her legacy and love of design, he launched his company in 2012, soon boasting a roster of high-profile clients including Salvatore Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Club Monaco, and Hotel ZaZa.
Entering year three, Underwood continues to expand An Intimate Place, finding new ways to channel his mother’s immeasurable influence. All the while, his famous attention to detail and signature eclecticism have given rise to an enchanting obsession. Read on to learn how he takes a moment to enjoy the sweet smell of success.

The Obsession: Bernard Underwood maintains his glow with an addiction to lavish, richly scented candles.
The Confession: “The best way I can relax after long days of designing is by lighting a candle in every room of my home and turning on soothing jazz,” he explains. “Like magic, I’ve created my own intimate place.”
The Rationalization: “A candle is about more than setting the mood, because a flame shining brightly in darkness represents the light that leads you through the night and guides you, even in the blackest moments,” Underwood so elegantly explains. “I see it not as a candle but as a compass.”
The Collection: The entrepreneur is currently lighting up his own creations, including the B.U. Sexy and Billie candle collections. He notes that his upcoming B.U. Sexy candles convey the “scent of a man, but capture the air of a woman.” Billie, crafted in memory of his mother, is “beautiful, strong, and sleek.”
Shop It: Underwood’s luxe candles launch later this year. Visit AnIntimatePlace.com for the latest news.

Dapper dudes descend on West Village for grand openings of WAREhaus and Rye 51

We couldn't take our eyes off Bernard Underwood at Rye 51's opening fete. His head-to-toe look reminded us of a preppy, yet sophisticated Prince.
Though Underwood designed the interior and windows of the new men's shop via his design firm, An Intimate Place, Underwood wore all Kenneth Cole — even the shoes. "I worked there for 10 years," he says.
When asked how he came up with the vision for Rye's hipster-chic interior, Underwood points to his head. His look is as cool as the space he created. He is a true stylemaker.
